Broadmoor holiday classic takes ‘dinner and a show’ to new levels

For more than two decades, The Broadmoor has elevated the concept of “dinner and a show” to soaring new heights with its annual Classic Broadmoor Holiday show, a feast for the eyes, ears and palate that regularly draws thousands of holiday revelers from across Colorado and t
he U.S.
“We have people coming in from all over the nation, and we have many who return year after year after year,” said Ken Miller, The Broadmoor’s director of music and entertainment. “Over the course of our shows, we usually get between 2,000 and 3,000 people.”
The evening begins with a festive, three-course dinner, followed by a variety show that blends Broadway, swing, sacred music and smooth jazz with time-honored holiday classics.
Miller, who directs and performs, has always taken pride in the eclectic lineup of musical powerhouses who come to Colorado Springs to perform in the holiday show.
“In the past, we’ve had Sheena Easton, Debby Boone, Suzy Bogguss, Melissa Manchester, and so many others,” he said. “Too many to count.”
This year’s lineup includes vocalist and Air Force veteran Julie Bradley, Frank Sinatra-style crooner Derek Evilsizor, guitarist Wayne Wilkinson, bassist Ron Bland, drummer Chris Panish, the all-female a cappella group The Noelles; soprano Amy Mushall, and international jazz artist Nelson Rangell.
“It’s a great, upbeat, family-oriented evening,” Miller said. “The cuisine is incredible, you get to see a nice show with all different kinds of music. It’s a fantastic evening of entertainment. We always thank the military, so we’ll be doing a special song for them as well.”
An Air Force veteran and former chief arranger for the Air Force Academy Band, Miller has had a long and varied career. He has composed music for hundreds of television shows, including “Friends,” “Saturday Night Live,” “The Big Bang Theory,” “Desperate Housewives,” “Bones,” “Parks and Recreation,” and many more. He has served as The Broadmoor’s director of music and entertainment since Jan. 1, 2003.
This year’s Classic Holiday Show will be Miller’s swan song at The Broadmoor, he said. On Jan. 1, he will step down.
“I’ve enjoyed it, and I love the challenge of putting the show together, but I’ve done 23 of these,” he said. “I’m a writer and composer, so I will continue to do those things. But I also need to make time for my family and my grandkids.”
Miller said this year’s show will be one to remember, filled with joyful tunes, holiday cheer and a few surprises. He also hopes a special guest will visit during the show.
“We’re hoping for a visit from Santa Claus,” Miller said. “He hasn’t missed us yet, but he’s a busy guy. We’re keeping our fingers crossed.”
