President Donald Trump will speak Tuesday at a casino resort in the Poconos during his first visit to Northeast Pennsylvania since beginning his second term in January. Here’s what to know: Where and when Trump is expected to discuss the economy during the event at Mount Airy Casino Resort in Para dise Twp., Monroe County, which will begin at 6 p.m. It’s apparently the start of what the news outlet Axios reported will be for Trump “a year of heavy stateside travel that’s focused on selling his economic agenda” ahead of next year’s midterm elections. The president will specifically discuss “ending the inflation crisis that he says was inherited from his predecessor, Joe Biden,” the Associated Press reported last week, citing an anonymous White House official. The Monroe County event follows November off-year elections that featured several high-profile Democratic victories, including gubernatorial wins in New Jersey and Virginia. Those and other results encouraged Democrats hoping to wrest control of the House of Representatives from the GOP in next year’s midterms. Republicans currently hold majorities in both the House and Senate. Recapturing majority-control of the Senate is a more daunting prospect for Democrats. Tuesday’s planned visit to the region also follows a recent drop in polling for Trump, with a November Gallup poll putting both his overall approval rating and his approval rating on the issue of the economy at just 36%. His overall approval rating among Republicans was, unsurprisingly, considerably higher, but still lower than in recent months. It stood at 84% in November, down from 91% in October and 93% in both August and September, per the recent Gallup poll. Mount Airy Casino Resort is located at 312 Woodland Road, Mt. Pocono, PA 18344. Plan to attend? The Republican Party of Pennsylvania recently shared on social media a registration link for those hoping to attend the Mount Airy event. Prospective attendees who click the link, which is also available via the online version of this article on the newspaper’s website, will be asked to provide their first and last name, email address and phone number. It was not immediately clear how many attendees will be permitted. Traffic, delays The Pennsylvania State Police said it will be assisting the Secret Service with safety and security at the Mount Airy event.. Trump’s visit will prompt temporary delays and closures on roadways in the vicinity of Mount Pocono Borough and Coolbaugh, Paradise and Pocono townships, according to a state police news release. The release reminds motorists of potential “delays, backups and congestion in and around those areas” Tuesday evening. Previous visits Tuesday’s visit will mark Trump’s first return to Northeast Pennsylvania since winning back the presidency last year, when he twice campaigned in the region. Then-candidate Trump held a campaign rally Oct. 9, 2024, at the Riverfront Sports complex in Scranton. It followed an Aug. 17, 2024, rally at Mohegan Arena at Casey Plaza in Wilkes-Barre Twp. Trump previously spoke at Mohegan in April 2016, October 2016, August 2018 and September 2022. He also participated in a Fox News town hall at the Scranton Cultural Center at the Masonic Temple on March 5, 2020; held an Aug. 20, 2020, rally at Mariotti Building Products in Old Forge; and landed and spoke at the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport in Pittston Twp. on Nov. 2, 2020. He also campaigned twice at Lackawanna College in Scranton during his successful 2016 presidential campaign. Those events took place in July and November 2016, respectively. ...read more read less
