Federal agents injured a man in a northeast Salem parking lot Sunday morning while attempting  an immigration arrest, according to an advocacy group. The man, who has not been identified, was injured by agents reported to be with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement around 10 a.m., said Cris tina Marquez, who does community response work for the Oregon for All coalition. The coalition told Salem Reporter about the reported injury Sunday afternoon. The account couldn’t be independently verified. The arrest happened in the parking lot of Mega Foods, a grocery store on Northeast Lancaster Drive. Oregon for All had no information about why federal agents tried to arrest the man. ICE and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security didn’t respond to emailed questions Sunday about the arrest and how the man was injured. The man has lived in the United States for almost 20 years and is married to a U.S. citizen, according to Oregon for All. The arrest follows weeks of increasing ICE and federal activity around Salem that led the Salem City Council last week to declare a state of emergency over immigration enforcement. Latinos Unidos Siempre, a local youth-led grassroots organization, has reported five immigration arrests over the weekend, according to social media posts. The Sunday arrest is the first report of federal agents injuring someone during an immigration arrest in Salem. During the Sunday arrest, agents broke at least one window of the man’s car, according to Oregon for All spokesperson Diane Goodwin. The arrest and the man’s injury was reported to the Portland Immigrant Rights Coalition hotline around 10 a.m., Marquez said. Representatives of the coalition responding to the initial report of an arrest found the man screaming in pain on the ground, according to Marquez. The man had a hard time standing and reported back pain, she said. Emergency responders with the Salem Fire Department arrived after receiving a call about the injury at 10:34 a.m. Sunday, according to Assistant Chief Brian Carrara. He declined to provide information about the man’s injury or what medical treatment was provided, citing the man’s privacy. The ICE agents followed as the man was taken to Salem Hospital for treatment and stayed outside for several hours, according to Marquez. After leaving around 4 p.m., the agents returned to the hospital around 4:45 p.m., Goodwin said. Agents at the hospital were wearing plain clothes with vests reading “Police,” Marquez said. Representatives of Salem Health didn’t respond to questions Sunday about hospital policy for sharing information with immigration agents and allowing them inside. The man was still in the hospital as of Sunday evening and his condition is unknown.  Sgt. Jon Hardy, Salem Police Department spokesman, said the agency received a call from Salem Hospital at 1:22 p.m. alerting police to the situation, but he could provide no further information. Before attempting to arrest the man at Mega Foods, ICE agents had arrested someone at the Walmart across the street, Marquez said. Agents are “actively targeting places key to the brown community,” she said. Northeast Salem is home to many Hispanic-owned businesses, including Don Pedro Mayor, where Marquez said ICE agents were reported recently. Contact reporter Madeleine Moore: [email protected].
