CYPRESS — The Los Alamitos thoroughbred meet began with the first 15 races being won by 15 different trainers Friday and Saturday, including upsets by low-percentage barns. Then the surprises ended emphatically with Bob Baffert winning the Starlet Stakes. When Consequent and jockey Kazushi Kimura passed dueling leaders in the last 100 yards to win by a length, Baffert had his ninth consecutive victory in the $200,000, Grade II race for 2-year-old fillies. That extended what is believed to be a North American record winning streak for a trainer in one stakes event. Baffert’s other long streaks are seven in a row in the Del Mar Futurity for 2-year-olds in 1996-2002 and his current seven in a row in Santa Anita’s Robert B. Lewis Stakes for 3-year-olds. “Another good horse,” said Mike Marlow, Baffert’s Los Alamitos-based assistant trainer. “We’ve had a lot of them.” Kimura had watched Consequent’s green performance in a debut victory under Juan Hernandez at Del Mar and knew he should keep her engaged. “I just tried to make sure she kept busy, and kept close to the leaders, and it worked out,” Kimura said. Consequent, a Juddmonte-owned daughter of Into Mischief and Cognitive ran the 1-1/16 miles in 1:44.03, making this the fastest Starlet of the 2020s. As often happens, Baffert won with the less obvious of his multiple entries. Consequent paid $7.60 as bettors’ second choice behind Baffert’s Nimah, who went off at 2-5 and finished third with Hernandez. Baffert had scratched his third filly, Himika, early in the day. Nimah battled with Doug O’Neill-trained Cashed, who finished second under Tiago Pereira at 7-1. Consequent’s slight upset helped to produce a carryover in the pick 6, putting an extra $44.571 in the pool for Sunday’s 12:30 p.m. card. The only winning favorite in the sequence Saturday was Baffert’s debuting Greenwich Village ($4.80), with Hernandez; that made Baffert the meet’s first two-time winning trainer. Bigger upsets mattered more. Scoop of Chocolate ($21) broke his maiden in the fourth race with jockey Adrian Escobedo for trainer Eric Berman, who scored his first victory since March 2021 at the Los Alamitos nighttime meet. Italio ($13.20) and Cristobal Herrera won the sixth race for trainer Marcia Stortz. It’s a Cinch ($20.60) and Edwin Maldonado won the ninth for trainer Luis Mendez. Some smaller barns count on the purses they earn by being competitive in the lower-class races at Los Al’s three short daytime meets each year. But Baffert dominates the meet’s graded stakes. The Starlet has been won by Baffert 11 times overall, dating to when it was run at Hollywood Park. The $200,000, Grade II Los Alamitos Futurity, which will be run next Saturday, has been won by the Hall of Fame trainer 14 times going back to Hollywood Futurity days.
