Three Delaware police officers were honored on Friday for possibly stopping a terror attack on the University of Delaware just before Thanksgiving.
It all started as just a routine car stop, but state and federal law enforcement agents say that the officers quickly figured out that their suspect
had a plan to carry out an attack as well as the fire power to make it happen.
The three officers from the New Castle County Police Department said that they were just doing their job on Monday, Nov. 24 when they came into contact with 25-year-old Luqmaan Khan.
“There’s a lot of bad people out there and we are taking them off the street every day, but yeah this one hit different,” Officer First Class Nathan Jupiter said.
The officers approached Khan in his pickup truck in Canby Park just before midnight when the park had been closed.
When Khan allegedly wouldn’t cooperate, the officers arrested him and then found he was armed with a loaded handgun, more than 100 rounds of ammo and armored ballistic plates.
Khan also had a notebook that reportedly states his desire to by a martyr and names a member of the University of Delaware Police Department as a target, officials said.
When agents raided his house in Wilmington, they said that they found hand-drawn maps of the UD Police Department building and his apparent target’s work schedule, according to officials.
“The university police have had no contact with him before. The investigation is ongoing. We are in the early stages. We really want to piece this together and everyone wants to know the why, but we don’t have those answers yet,” University of Department Police Chief Patrick Ogden said.
The three officers were praised by the boss and from many others up and down the state but they said they just want to get back out on the beat.
“Just go strap on the boots every day and do our job as usual. It’s not gonna change my mentality of what I’m doing or who I am,” Officer First Class Jay Scerbo said.
Khan faces state and federal charges including resisting arrest, carrying a concealed deadly weapon, weapon violations and related offenses
