• Glenville put on a dominant display on defense en route to a 45-7 win over Shelby in the Division IV state championship game at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton on Dec. 5.
The Tarblooders (12-3) held Shelby to just 11 yards of total offense on 24 plays. Quarterback Brayden DeVito was on
e of three finalists for the Mr. Football award, but he struggled throughout as he was just 3 of 18 passing for 38 yards and an interception. DiVito was sacked four times.
Jaquan Gibon’s 92-yard punt return for a touchdown opened the scoring for Glenville. Chris Newell rushed for 81 yards and two touchdowns, and Romell Phillips was the team’s leading rusher with 133 yards on 14 carries.
Tarblooders QB Arvell Nelson was 6 of 17 for 90 yards and a TD pass to Joseph Saffold that covered 31 yards.
Shelby’s season ended at 14-1.
• Columbus Watterson capped an impressive run through the D-III playoffs with a 30-0 shutout of Toledo Central Catholic during the state championship game in Canton.
Watterson (14-0) posted three shutouts in the playoffs and outscored its five opponents, 218-15.
Jake McCoy scored two rushing touchdowns, while Eagles quarterback Drew Bellisari threw for a 250 yards and a TD pass. He was 13 of 22 and threw for interceptions, but Watterson’s defense negated those mistakes.
Central Catholic (11-5) was held to 179 yards, lost a fumble, threw three interceptions and was sacked twice.
