DEWITT – Right away the area’s two high school boys swim teams would compete against one another and it was Fayetteville-Manlius getting the best of it by a significant margin. The Hornets’ depth and balance proved too much for Jamesville-DeWitt/Christian Brothers Academy as F-M prevailed 104- 80 Wednesday night at J-D Middle School. Sweeping the relays, the Hornets got it going in the 200 medley where Branden LeRoy, David Park, Ben Prendergast and Derick Wang posted one minute 47.16 seconds topping the Red Rams’ 1:48.75. Wang returned with Conor Kelly and Jack Prendergast for a 1:36.14 in the 200 freestyle relay ahead of a second F-M side’s 1:38.91 from Park, Anthony Bottar, Michael Wilson and Silas Kligerman. And in the 400 freestyle relay Wilson, Wang, LeRoy and Ben Prendergast finished in 3:40.24. Sweeping the top three in the 200 freestyle F-M had Ben Prendergast win in 1:54.59 ahead of Kligerman (2:00.68) and Alex Kim (2:01.30), with Prendergast also first in the 100 breaststroke in 1:06.13 beating a 1:07.98 from Park and 1:12.87 from Caleb Nelson. Lesha Kabunov, J-D/CBA’s top returning swimmer, would roll to first place in the 200 individual medley in 2:08.62 well clear of Vlad Roman’s 2:17.16 for the Hornets. Then Kabunov squared off with Ben Prendergast in the 100 butterfly and prevailed 55.39 seconds to Prendergast’s 56.48 right before Jack Prendergast in 51.95 led yet another top-three F-M sweep in the 100 freestyle with Kim second in 52.19 and Kelly getting third place with 54.10. Jonas Sarmast won, too, for J-D/CBA as he swam the 50 freestyle in 23.48 seconds beating Wang’s 23.79 and Kelly’s 24.11 as eighth-grader Griffin Wormer edged Kligerman 5:45.20 to 5:45.62 in a close 500 freestyle, with Ryan Werner third in 5:48.35. In the 100 backstroke Sarmast’s 1:01.13 was just behind a winning 1:00.68 from LeRoy. The Rams were 1-2 in diving, freshman Kash Loomis earning 247.60 points ahead of the 190.95 from eighth-grader Pryde Cosby. F-M travels next Wednesday to Fulton as J-D/CBA will travel north on Dec. 13 for the Indian River Invitational. ...read more read less
