Brrrr! In Freezing Cold, City’s Christmas Tree Lights Up

Warm lights and the smell of kettle corn cut through the cold as Brittany Jones picked up a compimentary bag from the stand.
Holiday revelers braved below-freezing temperatures Thursday to eat kettle corn, listen to Co-Op High School’s band, and watch a Norway Spruce explode in color during th
e city’s annual Christmas tree lighting on the Green.
Chris Randall was on the scene to photograph the event for the Independent, notwithstanding the extreme cold and relatively sparse attendance. Enjoy his expert photos, pictured above and below.

Charnice Hoegnifloh, who stayed in New Haven after graduating Yale, now teaches at Wilbur Cross High School through Teach for America, visited the Green to create content for her new channel @charnicescorner.
The band from Cooperative Arts and Humanities High School took the stage under the direction of instructor Matthew Chassen, who played saxophone during the set.
Corey Powers and Shannon Murphy looked over the trees for sale at the Downtown NHV Tree Farm.
The glow of the holiday lights made a colorful backdrop as children gathered for a photo on the New Haven Green. (This photo was taken with the permission by their mother).
The carousel glowed against the night sky as families gathered for rides.
