Police arrested a teenager believed to be responsible for a terrifying attack on the subway in which a homeless man was set on fire aboard a train in Manhattan. Hiram Carrero was arrested Thursday by members of a joint task force and was charged with attempted murder in connection to the attack o n a 56-year-old homeless man on a 3 train at the 34th Street-Penn Station stop around 3 a.m. Monday. The 18-year-old Carrero didn’t say a word as he was led out out the police stationhouse in handcuffs Thursday afternoon, and put into a waiting NYPD vehicle. According to police, the attack occurred as the train pulled into the busy station. Carrero approached the victim while briefly entering the train car, and allegedly set him on fire. Video showed the immediate aftermath of the assault, as officers were seen tending to the victim who looked to have serious burns on both his legs. Carrero, meanwhile, boarded a northbound 3 train. It wasn’t until late Tuesday night that investigators released images of the suspect as he left a station. He was arrested Thursday, and in addition to attempted murder, faces charges including assault, criminal mischief, arson and reckless endangerment. The victim was taken to the hospital with serious burns and is expected to survive. It’s not clear if he knew his attacker. The incident is reminiscent of an attack in Dec. 2024 that saw a 57-year-old homeless woman killed after a 34-year-old man lit her on fire as she slept on a Brooklyn-bound F train. It was not immediately clear when Carrero would be scheduled to appear in court. Anyone with information regarding the alleged incident is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS. ...read more read less
