(KRON) -- Four BART stations in San Mateo County are set to receive “glow-ups” after the Bay Area Rapid Transit District Board of Directors approved $12 million for improvements. The planned enhancements, according to a news release Thursday, include new LED lighting and structure upgrades. The improvements for Colma, South San Francisco, San Bruno and Millbrae BART stations are slated to begin in early 2026 and be completed by the end of the year, officials said. As part of the $12 million in upgrades, which BART called its "Station Glow-Up Strategy," Colma, South SF and San Bruno stations will get new LED lighting and roof upgrades. South SF and San Bruno stations will also receive specialized cleaning. “Dated” metal frame bus shelters at Colma and South SF stations, which BART said are prone to continuous vandalism and graffiti, will be removed. Two passengers found dead on separate BART trains Millbrae station upgrades will come in the form of gutter and downspout repairs to address water leaking. Work to bring new LED lighting to the southernmost station on the San Francisco Peninsula is already underway, BART said. No improvements to the Daly City or San Francisco International Airport stations were announced to be a part of the $12 million upgrades. According to BART, next year’s planned improvements come after crews this year repaired floors, benches and gutters at San Mateo County stations, as well as removed old equipment and aging artwork. “These upgrades will improve the functional use and aesthetics of our important San Mateo County stations while demonstrating our gratitude and commitment to our continued partnership with the county,” said BART Board President Mark Foley. In November, BART said it continues to face a $375 million budget deficit. ...read more read less
