At least 10 people were treated for elevated carbon monoxide levels being blamed on an apparent faulty oil burner in a Bronx apartment building Thursday morning, according to the FDNY.
The original call came in shortly after 9 a.m. for someone who was feeling ill at a building in Stratford Avenue
between Watson Avenue and Pelham Line, firefighters said.
When first responders got on scene, they found high carbon monoxide levels on all four floors, leading to the evacuation of all 44 apartments, according to the FDNY.
Firefighters on scene said that of the 10 people treated, with three being hospitalized. One person with a pre-existing heart condition was in serious condition. The ages of those treated were not immediately known, but a resident told NBC New York that a teen girl was taken from the scene after she appeared like she fainted.
The incident is being blamed on a faulty oil burner that the FDNY shut down leading to the residents, who were allowed back in after it was vented, to go without heat until the Department of Buildings finishes inspecting the oil burner.
Apparently, according to fire officials, the burner had been serviced and there was an issue with the fumes going from the basement through the building.
