Mother faces charges for bringing gun to school, harassing her child’s teacher
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — An Indianapolis woman is facing two charges for bringing a gun to an elementary school and harassing her child’s teacher, according to court documents.
Carrie Rivers, 48, is charged with
a low-level felony count of possession of a firearm on school property, and a misdemeanor charge of harassment, according to court documents shared with News 8.
The probable cause affidavit said Rivers brought a handgun to Valley Mills Elementary School about 10:20 a.m. Wednesday, April 9. It happened after she withdrew her daughter from the school for homeschooling.
Rivers went to the school to confront officials about an assignment she said taught students about same-sex relationships. Rivers took issue with this subject being discussed in schools. The court document said, “She stated that her daughter’s teacher gave her work assignment that had to do with the same sexuality relationships. She did not feel that the school should be teaching that.
“She also said that the teacher’s girlfriend had been up to the school at some time and was displaying physical affection with one another in the presence of the students.”
Charging documents say Rivers also called her daughter’s teacher an offensive word describing lesbians.
The teacher told officers she gave students an assignment about flags during the first quarter of the school year. While explaining the assignment, she gave examples of country flags and referenced a rainbow flag in her classroom with the words “be kind” on it.
According to court documents, Rivers contacted her child’s teacher and expressed discomfort about the assignment. She said she believed the teacher was pushing her personal beliefs on her daughter.
The teacher dismissed the child from participating in the assignment.
Documents said law enforcement was called to the school “for an activated raptor system alert involving an irate parent.”
Rivers was held in the assistant principal’s office while police arrived.
“As she exited the administrative office of Assistant Principal Ashley Zarse and saw law enforcement officers, she made the following verbal statement, ‘okay, bring them on’ as she looked at all responding police officers,” the document said.
Police removed the gun from River’s hip holster and disarmed the weapon.
Rivers told officers “she didn’t even realize that she had it on because she is so used to wearing it and has been on school property with it on before.”
She was given the firearm back and allowed to exit school property.
About 25 minutes after exiting school property, Rivers sent her child’s teacher a threatening messing via the school messaging app.
The following is part of that message and a direct quote from the charging documents.
“…god will condemn you to hell not only for your personal beliefs but for the fact that you use your position to mess with the minds of our children you are sick individual and need to lose you teaching license and this is only piece of the puzzle if you ever put you hand on my kid your going to have to deal with me have every right to be angry because your child predator and your only hope is ur b*** ass wife that is cop otherwise someone else woulda already delt with for ur wrongs. messed with the wrong family. I’ll tell you that so please say ur prayers and kiss ur kids goodbye and goodnight never know when god says its our time so always be prepared.”
The teacher told law enforcement she feared for her safety after Rivers came to school with a gun, was “irate” with administration and sent that message.
Law enforcement informed the teacher she could request a protective order against Rivers. So far, the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office has only shared a “Stay Away Order” that required Rivers to stay away from Valley Mills Elementary School.
The teacher told law enforcement that she did not come to work the day after the incident due to messages and threats from Rivers.
At 11:23 a.m., the teacher got a Facebook friend request from Carrie Loney. The charging documents state that Loney is the maiden name of Carrie Rivers.
That account sent the teacher this message.
“Child Predator, Putting her hands on kids, sick, nasty teacher, you should never tell precious innocent kids that it’s ok to be in same sex relationships, you should never be kissing your wife in front of your students, or push your beliefs on our children, Now see why you’ve gotten death threats in the pass, she need an DOC number ASAP it’s not right what she’s doing and the way she’s acting in front of our children. Please investigate this.”
Rivers accused responding officer Officer Tabetha Emenaker of having a relationship with her child’s teacher. Another officer told Rivers that Emenaker had no personal connection to the teacher and was only there to respond to the call.
The teacher told law enforcement she keeps a picture of her family on her desk, which includes her wife and child.
Online court records state Rivers posted bond of $500 on Saturday.
The Metropolitan School District of Decatur Township was not immediately available for a comment on Tuesday.
