Stretch Your Dollar: Easter savings on candy, gifts, groceries

WASHINGTON (DC News Now) -- The National Retail Federation (NRF) estimates that U.S. consumers will spend $23.6 billion while celebrating Easter this year.
“During this time of economic uncertainty, consumers are prioritizing their Easter celebrations, and retailers are ready to help them enjoy
this special occasion with loved ones,” NRF Vice President of Industry and Consumer Insights Katherine Cullen said.
Many stores are holding sales on candy, gifts and groceries in the week leading up to Easter Sunday.
Target shoppers, for example, can buy one bag of candy and get 25% off a second bag. The Target Dollar Spot is stocked with plastic eggs and Easter-themed trinkets to fill baskets.

Shoppers looking for discounts can find plenty at 5 Below, which is well-stocked with Easter candy, baskets and gifts. For those hosting Easter egg hunts, Dollar Tree sells a dozen plastic fillable eggs for $1.25.
Egg prices have hit record highs in recent weeks -- a dozen eggs is about $6. To cut back on costs, many are turning to alternatives to dying Easter eggs this year, such as potatoes and marshmallows. Michael's is selling craft kits to decorate fake eggs.
NRF found that most people are celebrating by cooking for family and friends. Walmart's Easter dinner package is about $35 and includes a spiral-cut ham, a five-pound bag of russet potatoes, asparagus, green beans, corn, rolls and cake. ...read more read less
