LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) – After an impressive run to the semifinals of The Basketball Tournament (TBT) last summer, La Familia is returning for another shot at the $1 million prize—this time with some notable additions from Kentucky’s storied basketball past.
On Tuesday morning, La
Familia announced that former Kentucky guards Doron Lamb and DeAndre Liggins will join the team for this summer’s TBT. They’ll team up with Willie Cauley-Stein, who returns after suiting up for La Familia in last year’s tournament. These three Wildcats are the first confirmed players, with more roster additions expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
Doron Lamb, a sharpshooting guard, was a key piece of Kentucky’s 2012 National Championship team under John Calipari. Lamb averaged 13.1 points per game over his two seasons in Lexington before being drafted by the Milwaukee Bucks in 2012. He spent parts of two seasons in the NBA with the Bucks and Orlando Magic, appearing in 100 games before continuing his career overseas and in the G League.
DeAndre Liggins played with the Wildcats from 2008 to 2011, gaining experience under both Billy Gillispie and John Calipari. A fan favorite for his hustle and lockdown perimeter defense, Liggins played a key role in UK’s Elite Eight run in 2011 before being selected in the second round of the NBA Draft by the Orlando Magic. He carved out a role as a defensive specialist in the NBA, playing for several teams including the Cavaliers, Heat, and Mavericks, and totaling over 170 NBA appearances. Liggins also earned NBA D-League All-Defensive honors and continued to shine in pro leagues around the world.
This year’s TBT will have a new feel for fans in Lexington. While last summer’s regional games were held at Rupp Arena, the 2025 Lexington Regional will shift to Memorial Coliseum from July 18-23. La Familia will compete in a bracket that includes X-Rayted, Tampa Florida Pickup Basketball, and War Ready—an Auburn alumni team.
