Pack the Pantries: South side food pantry serving thousands in new location
Apr 15, 2025
INDIANAPOLIS -- It's delivery day at Servant's Heart Indy.
Tuesday morning brought eight pallets of food from Midwest Food Bank to the south side food pantry.
Since 2024, Servant's Heart has been in a new location at 6025 Madison Avenue. Executive Director and Founder Bill Boone said the missi
on is still the same, serving thousands of Hoosiers across eight zip codes on Indy's south side.
”Right now, we are serving about 225 to 250 families a week," Boone said. "So, that's 1,000 families a month, so almost 3,500 lives touched each and every month."
Boone said they can't operate without food from Midwest Food Bank. The eight pallets unloaded Tuesday morning are just a small part of what feeds these neighbors.
The food is unloaded into a storage room with shelves stacked to the roof with food, refrigerators full to bursting and freezers with even more for people in need.
Boone has led the pantry for 22 years. Servant's Heart is open twice a week, Thursday from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. During those times, people can grab a shopping cart and get what they need.
”We try to have everything faced just like a grocery store, and we call this God's grocery store," Boone said.
Boone said they used to have people come in drive-thru style to pick up a food box, but found self-service to be less wasteful.
"This way, they're actually picking what foods that they'll eat, so what they've taken has actually gone down by them getting what they want," Boone said.
The self-service process is also more personable for the shoppers.
”One lady said, 'You make me feel human again,'" Boone said. "You're not a number, you're not something fast going through the line. We interact with them as they shop or just visit with them, get to know them."
It’s not just groceries; Servant’s Heart Indy also has what Boone calls the "Knick Knack Paddy Whack." He described it as an open yard sale for their clients to get household items they need.
”Clothing, we have furniture, household items, shoes, socks and just things people need," Boone said. "When we were called to start this ministry, it was to be more than just food."
All of this adds up to hungry south side Hoosiers with food on their tables.
