Anderson man convicted of impersonating homeland security officer
INGALLS, Ind. (WISH) — Armed with Molotov cocktails, black gloves taped around the wrists, and a fake government ID, one Anderson man is found guilty for a 2023 “mission” to vandalize a home.
In 2023, an Ingalls, Indiana
resident was being terrorized from vandalism which included fires that were lit in the driveway and inside the mailbox. Dec. 12, the Ingalls Police Department responded to that home from a call about a suspicious man walking towards the house.
The caller claimed that the man, later identified as Stearman, was carrying something and ran away back to his red Toyota RAV4 when security lights activated, scaring him.
An officer found the SUV, pulled it over, and approached. “Stearman pressed against the window his ID as well as an unknown government identification that included a government seal at the bottom,” the U.S. Attorney’s Office said in the conviction announcement.
The officer questioned Stearman – who was wearing black gloves taped at the wrists with black duct tape – but he repeatedly claimed that he was a Homeland Security officer returning from a “mission.”
Then, Stearman was arrested.
Inside the SUV was a lighter and four bottles smelling of fuel. Each was filled with yellow-brown liquid, small pieces of wood were inside and cloth was sticking out of the cap: they were Molotov cocktails.
Chemists from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives tested the contents, confirming the bottles were filled with gasoline.
Tuesday, Stearman was found guilty of possessing the Molotov cocktails and impersonating an officer.
