PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Governor Dan McKee and education commissioner Angélica Infante-Green are highlighting math camps taking place during school break.
More than 400 students across Providence are spending their April break back in the classroom, but this time, it’s by choice.
The distr
ict’s April Academy at Juanita Sanchez is just one stop on the governor’s tour of Learn365RI programs, math-focused camps backed by millions in state grant funding.
“The first step was attendance, our second level of this is now a mathematic strategy,” said McKee.
The program offers targeted instruction, enrichment activities and math practice for students in grades three through eight, all designed to help close learning gaps and build confidence.
“Learn365RI is out-of-the-classroom time that is helping assist what’s happening inside the classroom,” said McKee.
State leaders said Rhode Island is seeing real results, especially when it comes to math recovery.
“Math is applied throughout every single subject every day of life,” said commissioner Infante-Green.
“We were just noted by Stanford, Harvard, Dartmouth because of the work that’s happening in Rhode Island.”
The district is also taking a hands-on approach to tracking student progress.
“The way we’re collecting data, it’s actually hands-on right away so we can actually support students,” said Providence Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Javier Montañez.
And for students who may have struggled with math before, these camps offer a chance to see it in a new light.
“Many of our students fear math, I try to remind students that math is just another language,” said Superintendent Montañez.
Education officials say the goal is to keep the momentum going, in and out of the classroom.
