COVENTRY, R.I. (WLNE) — Community members in Coventry are now organizing door to door efforts to recall council members representing districts one, two and four, including Town Council President Hillary Lima.
This comes after months of heated town council meetings, most recently resulting in th
e resignations of former council members Scott Copley and James LeBlanc.
These former members called the town’s financial handlings into question.
ABC6 spoke with organizer Stacie Nichols about the their new push for community action.
“What we feel now is that is happening is that town council is circumnavigating the charter of Coventry which is in place to keep people honest and to bring transparency to our system of government,” said Nichols.
“We feel like if we don’t take a stand now we’re going to keep going down a road where people are making decisions in ways that aren’t transparent.”
Nichols and others canvassed over the weekend, and she said each of the three districts collecting signatures has about 100 so far, and that they’d need to reach 1,200 within 30 days of starting to take the next step in the process.
Nichols and other organizers plan to host a 9 a.m. meeting Thursday at Coventry Western Elementary where community members can sign petition paperwork.
We reached out to Councilwoman Lima, who said in a social media statement, in part:
The Solicitor explained, both to the council and the public, that unredacted invoices cannot legally be shared with the treasurer, and state law backs this up.
