CHARLESTON COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – A roadway that could help alleviate traffic near the Charleston International Airport and Boeing has received key environmental approval.
Airport Connector Road will consist of five lanes, designed to separate airport and commuter traffic from traffic associated
with the Boeing manufacturing facility. It will also provide increased traffic capacity to account for future economic growth in the area.
Charleston County officials said Tuesday that the project received a “Finding of No Significant Impact” determination from the Federal Highway Administration. The decision ends a lengthy environmental review period.
“Based on the information provided to complete the environmental process, the FHWA finds that the project will have no significant [human or environmental] impacts,” a portion of the determination letter read.
The project now advances to the right-of-way acquisition phase and moves closer to completion of the final design plans.
Charleston County Public Works Director Eric Adams said the determination is a major step for the Airport Connector Road project, reflecting years of careful planning, environmental study, and collaboration.
“With this approval in hand, we’re one step closer to delivering critical infrastructure that will improve traffic flow, support economic growth, and provide a safer, more efficient connection to and from the airport,” said Adams.
Construction of the roadway is expected to begin in the third quarter of 2026. It will take roughly two years to complete. Those interested in learning more about the road project can click here. ...read more read less
