Apr 15, 2025
WASHINGTON (DC News Now) -- D.C. health officials are urging the community to stay vigilant after a person who visited the District tested positive for measles earlier this month.
DC Health announced Monday that a person visited the District while they were contagious. Their investigation reveal
ed that the person was at the Five Guys on I Street NW on April 5, between 3:30 and 6:30 p.m.
As a result, officials are working to notify anyone who may have been at the restaurant that they may have been exposed to the virus.
Streateries could become permanent around the District
The highly contagious disease easily spreads through the air when an infected person breathes, coughs or sneezes.
Health officials noted that symptoms will typically develop in two stages. The first stage begins seven to 14 days after exposure, and a person may have a fever over 101 degrees, a runny nose, red watery eyes and a cough.
During the second stage, which takes place three to five after the initial symptoms start, a rash will appear on the face and start to spread to the rest of the body.
A person with measles is contagious four days before the rash appears until four days after.
If you were at Five Guys on April 8 during the listed time, monitor yourself for symptoms. If any measles symptoms start, immediately isolate yourself, stay away from others and call your health care provider or DC Health at 844-493-2652.
Officials said to call ahead before going to the doctor's office or emergency room.
