ROBESON COUNTY, N.C. (WBTW) — A Robeson County Detention Center inmate was placed back in custody after he escaped Monday morning and is facing a slew of new charges, the sheriff's office said.
Randall Ray Cummings, 32, of Lumberton, was held at the Robeson County Detention Center on larceny an
d shoplifting charges. He escaped while receiving medical treatment at the UNC Southeastern Medical Center after he assaulted a detention officer, deputies said.
Cummings was apprehended in the Lumberton area near Clybourn Church Road, according to the sheriff's office. He was charged with misdemeanor escape by an inmate from a jail/detention facility.
Cummings is also charged in connection with a breaking and entering of an abandoned home and a carjacking that happened after his escape, the sheriff's office said. He was charged with second-degree kidnapping, breaking and entering, robbery with a dangerous weapon, and assault on a female.
An internal investigation is being conducted on the detention officer's actions before and after Cummings' escape, according to the sheriff's office.
"Thank you to the citizens that assisted law enforcement this morning by providing valuable information leading to the escaped inmates capture," Sheriff Burnis Wilkins said.
