VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — For the first time since Virginia Beach School Board members voted to adopt a resolution that would suspend diversity, equity and inclusion in the city's public schools, residents had a chance to voice their opinions and concerns about the major decision.
The meeti
ng hosted by the Virginia Beach NAACP chapter brought out Virginia Beach leaders, residents and even Virginia Beach School Board member Dr. Alveta Green, who voted no on adopting the resolution to suspend DEI initiatives.
"I think it is unfortunate that all of us were not included in the original process when we were vetting the resolution," Green said. "I received it less than 24 hours prior."
Green was the only school board member in attendance at Monday night's meeting, though she did note others may not have come because it is spring break for the school division. She wants transparency moving forward.
"It's impacting students programs, meal programs, all kinds of programs can be impacted by it, the Title I schools," said Virginia Beach NAACP President Dr. Eric Majette.
"Everyone is extremely worried about the decision that the School Board made hastily about DEI," Del. Michael Feggans said.
The NAACP chapter has urged people to stand up and use their voice.
"Come out, educate yourself and get involved, get in the game and let's win this fight," Majette said.
The NAACP chapter is urging residents to speak up at the upcoming city council meeting Tuesday, and then at the School Board meeting next Tuesday, April 22. ...read more read less
