MENASHA, Wis. (WFRV) - Community members will have to wait awhile for it but a new recreational trail is likely coming to the Fox Cities.
The new trail will connect the Trestle Trail in Menasha to High Cliff State Park in Sherwood along a 11 mile route. There are several municipalities involved
in the project and officials tell Local 5 News that they're early on in the process.

"I think trails are something that just cuts across politics and people are generally just supportive of them," Andrew Dane who is the community development director for the city of Menasha told Local 5 News. "Big ambitious project, but it's going to pay some dividends down the road."
Dane said right now they're focused on hiring an engineer to design the first couple phases of the trail project. He said officials from the involved municipalities also are applying for grant funding for the project.

He projects that the project will cost about $10 million and take about 10 years to complete. He said they will cover that cost with grants, private donations, and public funds.
"I think this project is a great opportunity for public funding because it creates more accessibility and opportunities for our residents to be able to enjoy our community," said Menasha mayor Austin Hammond.
Mayor Hammond said the trail will run towards the city's downtown and hopes the extra bike riders, runners, and walkers will visit local businesses. Over in Sherwood where the new trail will connect to High Cliff State Park, officials there said they're also excited about the new trail connector.

"It'll bring more people out this way who might not know about Sherwood," said Brenda Stumpf who is the recreation coordinator for the village of Sherwood. "It's the gateway to High Cliffs State Park. Not a lot of people know that we're out here, small town and small community."
Officials say this will be a paved trail with significant boardwalk areas throughout the 11 miles.
"It's going to increase their trail space, Sherwood does have trails (but this provides) different means of using the trail," Stumpf added. "Going out further and exploring the other communities as well."
"Really with trails it's not too much of a sales job," Dane said. "Folks really want to see trails, anytime we do community surveys/outreach." ...read more read less
