Indiana Senate sends property tax bill to Gov. Braun
Apr 14, 2025
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (WANE) -- Early Tuesday morning, the Indiana Senate concurred with changes the House made to Senate Bill 1, sending the property tax legislation to Gov. Mike Braun. The vote was 27 to 22.
The House passed its version Thursday, by a vote of 65 to 29. Republicans said it will sav
e Hoosier homeowners $1.4 billion in property taxes over the next three years. Roughly two-thirds will pay less in property taxes in 2026 than they would in 2025, with an average household saving $300.
Democrats argued the bill would cut $750 million from public schools each year, and increase local income taxes by more than $1 billion each year to make up for fewer property tax dollars.
The Indiana Senate approved the House version early Tuesday morning, adjourning around 12:20 a.m.
Gov. Braun released a statement on the passage of Senate Bill 1 shortly after.
"This is historic property tax relief. Senate Bill 1 cuts property taxes for most Hoosier homeowners, farmers, and businesses, limits future tax hikes, and makes the tax system fairer, more transparent, and easier to understand. Real property tax relief was a core promise of my Freedom and Opportunity Agenda and with the collaborative leadership of our legislators, we are delivering real savings and protections for taxpayers. I look forward to signing the bill as soon as I receive it."
