East canyon winds pick up tonight in the Rio Grande Valley
Apr 14, 2025
A cold front will bring gusty east canyon winds into the Rio Grande Valley overnight. Parts of New Mexico will see a few spotty showers Tuesday.
After a record breaking warm weekend across New Mexico, temperatures are cooler Monday especially in eastern parts of the state. That's where a backdoor
cold front has moved in, leaving temperatures as much as 20° compared to Sunday. Winds have been breezy along and behind that front. It will push through the gaps of the central mountain chain Monday night, bringing breezy east winds into the Rio Grande Valley through Tuesday morning. Wind gusts up to 40 mph will be possible in Albuquerque by around 7:00 AM. Winds will relax through the rest of the morning.
High temperatures will be similar on Tuesday. A few spotty, light rain showers will be possible in northwest New Mexico Tuesday morning, with spotty showers in central and northern New Mexico in the afternoon. Most of the rain will evaporate before reaching the ground though, which could cause locally windy conditions with blowing dust.
Winds pick up across New Mexico Wednesday afternoon, bringing in warmer temperatures across the state again. The windiest day this week though will be Thursday, with southwesterly winds gusting anywhere from 40 to 60 mph. This will bring a very high fire danger across the state Thursday afternoon, so if any fire does develop it could spread quickly and uncontrollably. Areas of blowing dust will also be possible Thursday afternoon. Windy weather sticks around Friday and Saturday afternoon, especially across the southern half of the state.
A good chance for rain finally returns to New Mexico this weekend, especially Saturday. The best chances for rain will be in the northern and eastern halves of the state. Eastern New Mexico could see heavier rainfall as a backdoor cold front moves in, also bringing cooler temperatures Saturday afternoon. Some snow will also fall in the northern mountains. Drier and warmer weather returns for Easter Sunday. ...read more read less
