RAPID CITY, S.D. (KELO) --The Rapid City Police Department has been looking to expand its footprint with a new precinct on the north part of town. It will be 11,000 square feet and will cost $1.8 Million in city funds. This new precinct is located right next to the current north sector which o fficers have been working out of. "Everyday they rise to the challenge, but we want them to know that this investment is just another way that we can show them that we got your back. That we're going to provide the resources that you need to protect this great community and to help us to grow even better." Rapid City Mayor Jason Salamun Said The department says it's a cost-efficient move, because they'll be able to move in and get to work with minimal repairs. "For us the proximity, being as close as we are to the neighborhoods that need it the most and this location allows for that. Also, when looking at it, it just appeared to be in the best shape where it didn't need much remodel." RCPD Chief of Police Don Hedrick Said "We're grateful to be able to provide this for the residents in that area of town. To really improve the response times in public safety for this critical area of our city." Salamun Said This new precinct will have its own commanding officer and will be a prime location for RCPD training. "The space of this building is going to be able to give us the ability to centralize north sector efforts under one roof and this will include consolidation of our current sub station as well as at some point include the folks working at the Uptown Mall, bringing them all under one roof." Hedrick Said Once everything is approved, the new precinct should be up and running this fall.
