Storms give way to another quick cool down into Tuesday
Apr 14, 2025
It was a very spring-like start to the week across Central and Eastern Kentucky, and with that comes the return of storm chances. A strong cold front is moving through the commonwealth today, bringing the potential for strong to severe thunderstorms. Monday afternoon temperatures surged into the
mid-70s thanks to a gusty southwest wind, setting the stage for storm development later in the day.
The Storm Prediction Center has placed much of our region under a Level 2 out of 5 risk for severe weather. That means all modes of severe weather are possible, including damaging wind, large hail, and even a few isolated tornadoes. Storms are expected to fire late this afternoon into the early evening, especially east of the I-65 corridor. The severe weather risk will continue into the early hours of Tuesday before the front clears the region.
Cooler Air Moves In Behind the Front
Once the front pushes through overnight, we’ll notice a big change in the air for Tuesday. Afternoon highs will struggle to reach the mid to upper 50s, which is nearly 10 degrees below average for this time of year. Gusty northwest winds and lingering clouds will make it feel even cooler, though a little sunshine should peek through at times.
Wednesday morning will start off chilly, with lows dipping into the upper 30s to low 40s, and patchy frost could develop, especially in valleys and sheltered areas. The middle of the week stays dry and gradually warms up as sunshine returns and high pressure builds in from the west.
Warming Up Again, But Unsettled by Easter Weekend
Temperatures will slowly rebound through the 60s midweek and should climb back into the mid-70s by Friday. While Thursday may bring a few isolated showers—mainly north of the I-64 corridor—most of the region will stay dry with increasing warmth and humidity.
Another cold front arrives Saturday, bringing scattered showers and a few storms, but it doesn’t look like a washout. Rain chances back off a bit by Sunday as high pressure to the north temporarily nudges the boundary south. However, a new system could lift the front back north as a warm front by early next week, potentially leading to more unsettled and stormy weather.
