12-year-old girl charged for bringing blade to school
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A 12-year-old Perry Township Schools student has been charged as a juvenile with two criminal felonies after bringing a razor blade to Southport Sixth Grade Academy, resulting in another student being cut on the forear
m.
The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office on Monday said in a news release that the girl was charged with criminal recklessness, and possession of a knife on school property resulting in bodily injury.
Indiana generally keeps the names of juveniles out of the public record unless they are charged as adults.
A statement sent last week to parents and staff, shared with News 8 from Elizabeth Choi, the communications director for Perry Township Schools, said the injured student received immediate attention from school staff and was later released to parents for further medical care.
No details were provided in the school district’s statement on where the incident happened, although a post on social media from a parent said it happened at the Southport Sixth Grade Academy, which the prosecutor confirmed on Monday.
The parent’s post included images of the boy’s scar on his right wrist with stitches. The parent also said the razor blade was brought to school by a 12-year-old girl.
The district said Perry Township Schools Police reported the incident to the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office.
The district’s statement said that, while the intent of the student who brought the razor blade is unclear, the school emphasized that actions have consequences, especially when safety is compromised. No specific penalties for the student who brought the razor blade to school were included in the statement, but the district assured that any actions jeopardizing student and staff safety will be addressed seriously, in line with their Student Success Handbook.
Parents were encouraged to discuss the importance of following school rules with their children and to ensure that prohibited items are not brought to school inadvertently. Tips regarding safety concerns can be reported to the school’s See Something Say Something tipline at 317-789-3905 or through their website, PerryTownshipSchools.org.
The school district says it continues to prioritize safety and appreciates the community’s cooperation in maintaining a secure environment for students.
Two families in February sued the Perry Township Schools district over “pervasive violence and bullying.”
