FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - It seems as though a nice day where it is not windy has become a rarity across the area lately... In fact, March 2025 was the windiest March ever by average wind gust in the Summit City. Spring 2022 has been one of the windiest Our average wind gust in March wa s 33.53 mph in Fort Wayne. This is well above our March average, with reliable wind data dating back to 1941. What a big difference compared to average! This year, Fort Wayne experienced its windiest March ever by average wind gust. Our 2025 March average wind gust exceeds 2022 by only 0.20 mph, which ranks in second on the list. Rounding out the top five list is 2023, 2021, and 1976. It is interesting to note four out of the top five have come this decade. We topped 2022 for the windiest March by average wind gust this year. Remember the wind is caused by changes in pressure. Air pressure is always trying to reach a state of equilibrium, so differences in high and low pressure systems will create wind. This could be connected to the La Niña weather pattern that set up during the winter months. For Fort Wayne, our highest wind gust in March was 53 mph, but other parts of our area saw higher gusts, either from gradient winds or thunderstorms.
