(NATIONAL) — The deadline for taxes is April 15, and for those who wait until the last minute to file their taxes, it's a good idea to know what their options are. Luckily, there is still time to file electronically, and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) suggested several resources that people ca
n use for free.
According to the IRS, filing electronically can reduce tax errors, and the software prompts people to provide missing information. Additionally, when filed electronically, refunds can show up within 21 days if the option for direct deposit is chosen.
Options for free electronic filing include:
IRS Free File - For those with an adjusted gross income of $84,000 or less in 2024, the IRS has several guided tax software options to choose from. People in any income bracket can take advantage of the IRS Free File Fillable forms to fill out their own information and e-file themselves.
The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) - People who are 60 years and older and who qualify can take advantage of these programs to get free tax help by searching their zip code for providers in the link above.
MilTax - Military members and some veterans can get free return preparation and electronic filing software through the Department of Defense.
If you are getting money back after filing, you can track the status of your refund at the "Where's my refund?" site, using your Social Security or individual taxpayer ID number (ITIN), your filing status, and the exact refund amount on your return.
If you owe the IRS, you can avoid paying interest and some penalties by filing your tax return and paying by midnight in your timezone on April 15. For those who can't afford to pay the full amount by the deadline, they should pay what they can and apply for an online payment plan.
People who have circumstances making it impossible to file their tax return by the deadline should file a tax-filing extension, which is due by the tax deadline date. There are three ways to file an extension:
Individual taxpayers can electronically request an automatic tax-filing extension through IRS Free File by filling out Form 4868.
Taxpayers can submit an electronic payment using Direct Pay, debit card, or digital wallet, and indicate that the payment is for an extension.
Mailing the Form 4868 is possible, so long as it is sent in the mail by April 15.
