Sidney J. Sween, 84, of Rochester, MN died on Saturday (April 12, 2025) surrounded by loved ones at Mayo Clinic Rochester – St. Mary’s Campus.
Sidney John Sween was born November 22, 1940, in Grand Meadow, MN to Theodore and Elisa (Severson) Sween. He grew up on a farm in rur
al Mower County and attended Grand Meadow schools. Sidney was married on March 21, 1959 in Mower County, MN to Joyce M. Dahle. They had 3 boys together – Steven, Scott, and Todd. Following their marriage the couple moved to Stewartville, MN for a few years and then to Ostrander, MN. They moved to Rochester in 1986, where they raised their family and have continued to make their home. Sid was a 28-year employee of Chicago and North Western Railway Company until his retirement. Sidney was baptized and confirmed at Bear Creek Lutheran Church in rural Grand Meadow and was a longtime member of Zion Lutheran Church in Stewartville. He loved trains, fishing, going to tractor pulls with his brother Harold, following the Minnesota Twins and Vikings and enjoyed the occasional trip to the casino. Sid loved the time spent with his family, especially with his grandchildren.
Sidney is survived by – Joyce Dahle Sween of Rochester and 2 sons – Steven Sween (Mary Castner) of Rochester and Todd (Melisa) Sween of Bend, OR; 3 grandchildren – Deirdre (Jimmy) Salmon, Seth Sween and T.J. Sween. He was preceded in death by his son – Scott, his parents, and 2 brothers – Harold Sween and Donald Sween.
The funeral service for Sidney will be at 1:00 P.M. on Wednesday (April 16, 2025) at Zion Lutheran Church with Rev. Tim Bowman officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery in Stewartville, MN. Friends may call from 5 to 7:00 P.M. on Tuesday (April 15, 2025) at Griffin-Gray F.H. in Stewartville and 1 hr. prior to the service at the church on Wednesday afternoon.
