FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. (DC News Now) -- Lawns come to life in the springtime, in particular, but there's a huge difference between a lush front yard and grass that's gotten out of control to the point that it's become an eyesore.

in Fairfax County.
The county accepts the complaints starting in late Apirl to mid-October. In 2025, the start date is Monday, April 14.

So, here are the general rules on grass height, as provided by Fairfax County:
Residential Lots
Grass may not be taller than 12 inches in height on any developed residential lot less than one-half acre (21,780 square feet) in size, or any undeveloped residential lot less than onehalf acre in size and located in a recorded subdivision where 90% of the lots have been developed.
Grass height is not regulated on residential lots that are one-half acre or larger.
Commercial and Industrial Lots
Grass may not be taller than 12 inches in height on any commercial or industrial lot that is developed and unoccupied by a tenant.
When it comes to code enforcement, after Fairfax County sends a violation notice to the owner, if the person or company doesn't address the violation in the timeframe specified in the notice, the county may have the grass cut at the owner’s expense.
