WASHINGTON (DC News Now) -- Monday is the last day to file your taxes before the April 15 deadline, but the good news is you may still be able to file for free.
The Internal Revenue Service offers several options for helping last-minute filers file their taxes if their situation is pretty straig
htforward.
Those living in 25 states, including Maryland, can use IRS Direct File to file taxes for free. There is also the option to use IRS Free File to file federal taxes and get a six-month extension if needed.But remember, if you owe the IRS, you’ll need to make your payment by Tuesday to avoid accruing additional interest and penalties.

When filing, make sure you have all your paperwork together, like W-2s or 1099 forms.
You’ll also want to figure out if you need to itemize any deductions, like work expenses or charitable donations, and be sure to gather applicable receipts. If you have a mortgage, don’t forget form 1098 to deduct the interest you paid over the year.
