GARDEN CITY, Kan. (KSNW) -- A Garden City man has been arrested on multiple charges, including human trafficking, in connection with a forced marriage, police report.
The investigation began shortly before 6 a.m. on Friday, April 11, when police responded to a disturbance on the city's east side.
Someone had reported that a woman was screaming and pleading for help while a man followed behind her.
When police arrived, they found the woman, who had suffered multiple injuries. The suspect had already fled the area. The woman was transported to the hospital for treatment.
Police say the woman's family recently arranged her marriage to the man against her will in exchange for money and for her to be brought to Kansas from overseas to carry out the forced marriage. Investigators allege that getting the victim to the U.S. was done under coercive circumstances.
