Summit County seeking input on upcoming County Council redistricting
Apr 14, 2025
A new law is requiring Summit County to transition from at-large to district-based representation for county council elections, and the county is looking for public input on the change. The law will divide the county into geographic districts, and the voters in that district will elect one person who
lives in that district to represent them. Instead of voting on all five council seats, voters will only be able to cast a vote for the one council member who represents their district once every four years. The bill was signed into law on March 27. However, Governor Spencer Cox acknowledged problems with the legislation and committed to a special legislative session in May to address its “unintended consequences.”Currently, Summit County operates under a council-manager form of government, a structure for which residents in 2006 voted. Prior to that, Summit County had a three-member-commission form of government. Under both forms of government, all county voters elect all members of the commission or council — this is what is considered “at-large representation,” according to the county. The council-manager model separates legislative and executive responsibilities, with the County Council setting policy and a professional County Manager overseeing daily operations. The public can give feedback on the change in law at one of two upcoming public input sessions:Tuesday, April 15, 6 p.m.Council of Governments MeetingSummit County Courthouse60 N.
