PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Newly-restored South Coast Rail lines are back up and running Monday after frustrated riders were left stranded Sunday night when multiple trains failed to arrive.
Riders say they faced hours of confusion, delays and unkept promises.
“Yesterday, a group of us travele
d to Boston,” said Tanya Keiron.
“We intended on taking the 5:59 train from South Station back to Fall River. The signs were saying that it was canceled. There was one gentleman working at the communal booth. We were told that they were not enough employees to run the train.”
Riders said two earlier trains had also been canceled, leaving hundreds at South Station with little direction and no clear options.
“We got to East Taunton. There was over 100 of us. No bathrooms, no bus,” said Kieron.
“The buses were there but no drivers. The supervisor said we should wait for the 10:09 train, so we didn’t get back into Fall River until about 11:15.”
Joseph Kieron said the confusion only grew with mixed messages and no one to take charge.
“We waited two hours and then they told us to take a New Bedford train. There would be buses,” said Joseph Kieron.
“We get there and there’s nobody. Two buses with flashers on but no drivers. People had to go to the bathroom had to go to the woods.”
Riders were left in the dark, cold, wet and unsure what to do next.
If they just told us the next train was canceled, we would’ve stayed in the nice warm station,” said Joseph Kieron.
“I really feel bad for one family who brought three children just to go on a train ride.”
What started as an exciting new commuter option has left a lasting bad impression.
“They don’t have enough employees to run the trains on time,” said Tanya Kieron.
“If you’re gonna be using it to go to work, you’re probably not gonna make it on time.”
In a statement, a spokesperson for MBTA operator Keolis said:
Some trains on the Fall River/New Bedford and Kingston lines were cancelled yesterday due to crew availability issues. Passengers were accommodated by later trains or shuttle buses. For up-to-date information on delays and cancellations, passengers should subscribe to MBTA alerts or follow @MBTA_CR_Alerts on X
Passengers said they just want consistency, and communication, before they trust the line again.
