17yearold dies in Stokes County crash on way to prom, school district says; 'Profound loss'

STOKES COUNTY, N.C. (WGHP) — Troopers are investigating after a teenager was killed in a crash in the Piedmont Triad.
According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, they responded to a crash just after 6 p.m. on Saturday in Stokes County, on NC 8 near Sawmill Road.

Taurus was driving on NC 8, and veered off the road, overcorrected and left the road on the opposite side. The car then drove through a lawn and hit two trees. The driver, William James Turner, 17, of Madison, died at the scene.
Troopers believe excessive speed was a contributing factor.
The Stokes County Schools released the following statement:
It is with heavy hearts that we share the tragic news of the passing of Will Turner, who was involved in a fatal motor vehicle accident on Saturday, April 12, 2025, while on his way to Prom. As our school community grieves this profound loss, we want to express our deepest condolences to Will’s family and friends.
In response to this tragedy, additional grief counselors have been made available to support our students and staff during this difficult time. We are deeply grateful for the outpouring of support from our community, and we remain committed to coming together to comfort and uplift one another as we navigate this painful moment of grief.
