Minor league baseball team ditches alternate identity after one day: 'Approach was wrong'
Apr 14, 2025
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KTXL) — Minor league baseball teams are known to have unique identities already, but some unveil temporary monikers and uniforms that they play under for a few games each summer. A California minor league team announced those exact plans last week, only to quickly walk back the
temporary identity, calling their approach "wrong."
On Thursday, the Sacramento River Cats, the Triple-A affiliate for the San Francisco Giants, announced an alternate identity that they planned to show off for five games during the 2025 season, beginning on April 19. They were going to call themselves the "Sacramento Gold Diggers."
The name was meant to pay tribute to the California Gold Rush and Sacramento's proximity to the state's major gold fields.

The logo consisted of a miner named Dugg showcasing a gold tooth and a wink. The color paid homage to the Gold Rush history with gold pinstripes on an all-black jersey, officials said. The on-field cap consisted of a dollar sign with an “S” for Sacramento with a pickaxe, albeit with a baseball bat handle.
In the promotional video that the River Cats released in connection with the promotion, there were women shown with dollar signs in their eyes, among other imagery that could be linked to the negative connotation associated with the term "gold digger." That video has since been deleted.
Sacramento council member Lisa Kaplan commented on social media about the marketing video, which has since been taken down. She called it "sexist" and "misogynistic."
On Friday, the River Cats said it would no longer be moving forward with that promotion.
"Our recent marketing campaign for an alternative identity clearly missed the mark," the team said in a statement. "Our intention was to creatively reference the rich history of Sacramento and gold country, but our approach was wrong, and we are sorry for the mistake. We will no longer be using this identity."
A celestial smily face will be visible later this month: What to know
The River Cats have also removed the "Gold Diggers" campaign from its website, The Athletic reported.
This marks just the latest promotional campaign in the pro baseball sphere that has been walked back. Earlier this season, multiple MLB hats were pulled from online stores after they were printed with accidental vulgarities. ...read more read less
