LAS VEGAS (WISH) — Race car driver Tony Stewart has achieved a lot in his career.
The Indiana native is not only a three-time NASCAR Cup Series champion, but he has also won the IndyCar Series title in 1997 and has captured multiple USAC championships.
Of course, recently Stewart start
ed racing in the NHRA.
Last year, he was named the NHRA Rookie of the Year in the NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series.
And on Sunday, he added another accomplishment on his résumé, by getting his first NHRA Top Fuel victory as a driver. He won the 25th annual NHRA 4-Wide Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
Stewart beat a quad that featured reigning world champion Antron Brown, Justin Ashley and Jasmine Salinas.
“It’s unreal,” Stewart said in a race recap on NHRA’s website. “I haven’t been around an NHRA that long and I realize it takes a long time to win a race in this series, but everything in my career, I never had to wait over a year to win a race. I always figured it out in the first year, and multiple ones normally, so I’m just very appreciative of this win.”
Stewart won in the final by going 3.870 seconds at 317.42 mph in his dragster.
Brown finished in second place, going 3.912 second sat 302.35 mph in the final round.
“I think probably the one thing that may not sink in as much right now, but when Leah (Pruett, wife) brought Dom (son) up on the stage there, that’s an emotion that you can’t even think about or dream of,” Stewart said in the NHRA recap. “When I saw her coming up those steps with him, my heart stopped. That was a feeling I’ve never had in my life before, and I have a feeling when we lay down and put my head on a pillow tonight, that’s going to be the one thing that I want to reflect on the most tonight.”
Stewart is now up to second place in the NHRA Top Fuel standings. He is 16 points behind points leader Shawn Langdon.
