BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) -- In a climate where crime is incredibly unpredictable, a local jiu-jitsu group is offering women's self-defense classes. WIVB News 4 caught up with the woman behind the class to get a glimpse of her mission to empower and protect others in Western New York.
"A lot of times
we walk around, especially late at night," said Dusty Mueckl, women's self-defense instructor with Wolves Academy of Jiu-Jitsu in Kenmore. "A lot more people are outside, there's a lot more activities going on in the nighttime."
As the weather gets warmer, crimes against women tend to increase, which is why Mueckl said it's important now more than ever that women prepare themselves for any situation.
"We have a lot of real-life situations," Mueckl said. "In the summertime, we like to do things like go out to the parking lot and work in cars, or have real-life scenarios. And then when we're here we do a lot of different positions that you might hopefully never find yourself in but could possibly find yourself in."
If you do find yourself in a dangerous situation, Mueckl said it's important to remain calm and know exactly how to react.
"We talk a lot about not only the physical aspect, but we talk about setting boundaries, or not being able to speak up for yourself especially if you're feeling uncomfortable in a situation," Mueckl said. "And we talk about trusting your own instincts because if you're feeling something is off, something is probably off."
Even if it's not this class, Mueckl encouraged women and others to consider taking steps to ensure they're safe and know how to properly defend themselves.
"We are developing a community for women so they feel supported inside and outside of the gym," Mueckl said. "And I think it's really important, if it's not this class, something to make yourself feel more safe."
Anyone interested in learning more or participating in the class can find out how to register online at their website or just walk inside their location on Delaware Avenue in Kenmore.
