Driver in custody after twohour pursuit through North County
Apr 13, 2025
A driver who failed to pull over for a traffic stop led authorities on a pursuit — some times at slow speeds — that lasted more than two hours Sunday as a sheriff’s helicopter followed him through North County.
The driver, a man in his 20s, was eventually arrested after the vehicle ran over
spike strips in Rainbow, sheriff’s Lt. Noah Zarnow said.
The encounter started with report of a suspicious person on South Stage Coach Lane in Fallbrook about 10:15 a.m., he said. Deputies soon found a man matching the suspect’s description driving a black SUV with broken or missing windows. When they tried to pull him over, he instead drove off, running multiple red lights, Zarnow said.
Shortly before 10:35 a.m., authorities told the deputies to stop the chase for safety reasons, Zarnow said. Instead, the department kept tabs on the vehicle from overhead, tailing him in a helicopter. Ground units also followed him from a distance.
The slow-speed pursuit traveled on freeways in Oceanside, Carlsbad and then back toward Escondido. The driver eventually drove north to Rainbow. There, just after 12:50 p.m., the SUV drove over spike strips deputies had rolled out on Rice Canyon Road.
The vehicle came to a stop in a driveway of a home on nearby Rainbow Heights Road. The man refused to surrender for several minutes.
Video footage from SIDEO shows what it said was pepper balls being fired through the broken back window of the SUV. Seconds later, the man sticks his hands out of the driver’s side window. He then opens the door and gets out with his hands up as he walks toward deputies.
Medics from North County Fire Department tended to the suspect, who was reportedly tased by deputies.
Zarnow said it was not clear why the man initially refused to stop. He said the man would likely be arrested on suspicion of evading deputies.
