ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — This week, many folks from the Rochester area are dusting off their flip-flops and beach bags as they make their way to warm destinations for spring break!
At the Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport, travel experts shared with News 8 that more tha
n 10,000 people departed from the airport over the weekend heading to locations including Fort Lauderdale, Tampa, and Orlando.
One group of friends spending the week together is the Pittsford-Sutherland Girls Softball Team, who plan to practice in the Florida sun while also enjoying everything Orlando has to offer.
"We've been looking forward to it since the beginning of softball tryouts, and hopefully we can bring back the good weather for when we start playing our games here at home," Pittsford-Sutherland student Gabby Lyons said.
Some of the other girls traveling with the team shared specific plans they're most looking forward to.
"We're going to do a lot of team building things, including going out to dinner, sitting by the pool, and we're going to Top Golf," Pittsford-Sutherland student Cara Orlando said.
Senior Communications Specialist with AAA of Western New York Mark Gruba shared that Florida is one of the top destinations for folks vacationing from our area, along with a few other tropical spots.
"Our friends and neighbors choose Orlando, cruising out of Miami and Fort Lauderdale, Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic, and Hawaii, all in the top five," Gruba said.
Some of these destinations folks chose to drive to, and Gruba explained why.
“The advantage of doing something like road tripping is if you get different people involved, you can share the driving, you can share the cost of hotels, you can share a lot of the expenses along the way and that helps to lower the overall cost," Gruba said. “One isn't necessarily preferable to the other in terms of the experience, it really comes down to how long you want to be at that destination."
For the Pittsford-Sutherland Softball team which flew out of Rochester today, they're just excited to escape everyday life and share new experiences.
“It's a good way to get a break of the cold weather and some good spring training to practice for the season," Lyons said.
