WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – A couple returned to Wichita after nearly 10 years away to celebrate their 50th anniversary. Steve Ramsey and his wife, Carolyn, met on the First Street bridge in the 1970s, which Steve also had a hand in designing.
Their daughter, Shawn Nitcher, orchestrated a surprise f
or her mother and stepfather to commemorate the occasion. She hung signs along the railings reading "First Street Bridge to 50th Anniversary. Honk!!!"

"[Steve] is going to be so excited, and mom will be, you know, ear to ear smiles," Shawn said just before the surprise.
As their caregiver wheeled Steve up the bridge alongside Carolyn, they had no idea their family waited for them at the bridge's midpoint. Among the small group was Shawn's daughter Erin.
"They deserve something special, especially with the story behind this bridge," Erin said.
Carolyn was impressed by his job as a civil engineer for the city of Wichita, but her family wasn't convinced when he told them he designed the first street bridge.

"I said something quietly, 'I hate to leave.' And he said at the same time, 'I hate to see you leave.' Honestly, it was the same time," Carolyn said. "To prove [he designed the bridge], he brought me the title sheet for the plans for the bridge. And be brought a copy for my aunt."
The blueprints were enough, and the rest became history for their story.
"It hung above our bed for years until it faded ... but we didn't fade, not one bit," Carolyn said.

When it went up in the '70s, Steve had no idea what his bridge would come to support.
"Their relationship has been something that I have just looked up to for my entire life, so seeing them together has been really amazing," Erin Nitcher said.
It has become a foundation for their future relationships.
"He's rock-solid, truthful, and he's just a good guy," Carolyn said.
Since his career in Wichita, Steve has developed Parkinson’s disease, so he couldn't talk much during the interviews. But he and his wife were both ecstatic with their surprise. Carolyn says she hopes the next big benchmark they hit is a trip to Greece. ...read more read less
