INDIANAPOLIS — A parent is accused of bringing a gun to her child's school and threatening a teacher over an assignment her child was given.
According to court documents, officers with the Decatur Township School Police Department were called to Valley Mills Elementary School around 10:19 a.m.
Wednesday on a report of a raptor system alert that had been activated. Before they arrived at the scene, police had been informed that the incident they were responding to involved an "irate parent."
When police made it to the school, they noticed the parent had something on her waistband that resembled a firearm. Officers removed the gun and began to speak with the parent, court docs indicated.
The parent, who was ultimately identified as 48-year-old Carrie Rivers, told police her child was given "a work assignment that had to do with same sexuality relationships."
Police told Rivers that having a firearm on school property is an arrestable offense, court documents reported. Rivers then stated that she had not realized the firearm was on her person. She also noted that she had brought the firearm to the school in the past.
The latter part of Rivers' statement was further confirmed by a staff member at Valley Mills Elementary. As stated in court records, Rivers once came to the school, and as she exited, raised an arm enough to expose a firearm on her waistband. That staff member reportedly did not notice that Rivers had a gun on her until after she left the building.
Similarly, court docs noted that Rivers did not brandish the firearm while at the school on Wednesday.
However, just 25 minutes after Rivers was released by police, she allegedly sent messages to her child's teacher. According to court documents, Rivers told the teacher that "god will condemn you to hell not only for your personal beliefs but for the fact that you use your position to mess with the minds of our children."
Rivers also reportedly told the teacher they had "messed with the wrong family," could see "why [the teacher has] gotten death threats in the past" and that "u [sic] never know when god says it's our time so always be prepared."
The teacher did not go into work the next day out of fear for their safety, according to court documents.
Court docs indicated that Rivers did not have any active warrants out for her arrest during Wednesday's incident. A public police report filed on the incident, however, lists Rivers as an arrestee.
Indiana's public court reporting system indicates Rivers has been charged with possession of a firearm on school property — a Level 6 Felony — and harassment via written communication, a Class B Misdemeanor. Rivers is due in court for an initial hearing on Tuesday. ...read more read less
