Indiana lawmakers could soon send bill on property tax reform to governor
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – The Indiana Democratic Party says Lt. Gov. Micah Beckwith’s push to veto a controversial property tax overhaul shows Republicans “can’t deliver.”
The measure would allow homeowners to cla
im a credit worth up to 10% of their total property tax bill, maxing out at $300. Older Hoosiers and disabled veterans could claim additional credits.
An email to News 8 from Sam Barloga, communications director for the Indiana Democratic Party, said, “They know they are stuck in an impossible position because they can’t deliver on their own campaign promise to ‘reset” tax bills to 2021 levels. They should’ve never made a promise they couldn’t keep.”
Senate Bill 1 was meant to deliver the property tax relief that Gov. Mike Braun campaigned on.
Braun’s tax plan has gone through four drafts to date, ballooning to a 355-page bill that includes elaborate rules on local government finance, which critics believe falls short of its original intent.
On Saturday, Beckwith publicly called for a veto. “NOBODY understands this thing,” Beckwith wrote on social media. “The Gov needs to VETO this thing, call a special session and demand the legislature pass something that the average Hoosier can understand.”
As written, SB1 would cost local governments about $1.4 billion over three years. Referendums and local income tax changes to make up for the shortfall could lead to a net tax increase, critics say.
“Maybe not next year, but in the next two to three years, you’re going to see an income tax hike,” former Fort Wayne Mayor Paul Helmke said in Sunday’s episode of “All INdiana Politics.”
Braun endorsed the bill when it passed the Indiana House on Thursday, calling it “meaningful tax relief for Hoosiers” that he fully intends to sign into law.
The Indiana Senate, if the House concurs, could send SB1 to the governor’s desk as soon as Monday.
“Republicans are offering nothing but a shell game scam that increases the tax burden on working Hoosiers. It will raise local income tax for many by hundreds of dollars more than they’ll save on property taxes,” Barloga’s email said.
News 8 on Sunday morning reached out to the offices of Braun and Beckwith, and had not received a response by Sunday afternoon.

SB1 offers meaningful tax relief for Hoosiers. The plan to CUT, CAP, and REFORM means relief now and systemic changes for the future to protect taxpayers. Thank you to the House for their hard work and I look forward to the Senate sending this to my desk for signature next week!— Governor Mike Braun (@GovBraun) April 10, 2025
I’ve been on the phone ALL DAY with Hoosiers and government officials alike talking about the SB1 Property Tax Bill that the legislature is sending to the Governor.
