Man driving hearse leads police on chase in Lafayette
LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WISH) — A hearse led police on a pursuit through Lafayette on Friday night after it was spotted driving in the wrong direction on Sagamore Parkway, Indiana State Police said Saturday.
The incident began just after 10 p.m
. Friday when a state trooper saw the the hearse going northbound in the southbound lanes. The vehicle crossed back into the correct lanes but ran a red light at South Street, prompting the trooper to initiate a traffic stop.
The driver of the hearse, Herman Gray, 39, of Terre Haute, ignored the trooper’s attempt to stop the vehicle and continued northbound, state police said in a news release issued Saturday afternoon. The pursuit extended into West Lafayette, where Gray eventually stopped at the intersection of Sachem Boulevard and Sachem Court. Upon stopping, Gray initially ignored verbal commands from the officers but was eventually taken into custody without incident.
He was taken to the Tippecanoe County Jail.
State police say Gray faces several preliminary charges, including a low-level felony count of resisting law enforcement with a vehicle.
Gray remained in the Tippecanoe County jail on Sunday afternoon.
