BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First News) — Former LSU standout wide receiver Kyren Lacy was found dead Saturday night in Houston.
Lacy, 24, who had been projected as a potential pick in this year’s NFL Draft, was previously involved in a December car crash that left an elderly man dead. The in
cident had cast uncertainty over his future in football and led to ongoing legal scrutiny.
Lacy died from what investigators believe was a self-inflicted gunshot wound following a police pursuit in Harris County.
According to the Harris County Sheriff's Office, the incident began around 11:15 p.m. on April 12, when deputies with the Harris County Precinct 4 Constable’s Office responded to a weapons disturbance in the 9300 block of FM 1960. The caller, a relative of Lacy, reported that he had fired a gun into the ground during an argument and then fled the scene.
Deputies quickly located Lacy's vehicle and attempted a traffic stop around 11:35 p.m. A chase ensued and ended near the 25900 block of Aldine Westfield when Lacy’s vehicle crashed. When deputies approached the vehicle, they discovered Lacy had suffered what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical personnel. A handgun was found inside the vehicle, which was registered in Lacy’s name.
Investigators said preliminary findings, including body camera and dashcam footage, show no indication that officers fired any shots during or after the pursuit. The Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences will perform an autopsy.
Once the Harris County Sheriff's Office Homicide Unit and Crime Scene Unit complete their investigation, the case will be reviewed by the Civil Rights Division of the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.
The Thibodaux native played at LSU from 2022-2024 after spending a season with the Ragin' Cajuns. His final season was his best, catching 58 passes for 866 yards and nine touchdowns.
