RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- A new Black woman-owned gallery in the Jackson Ward area in Richmond is now open, allowing the public to meet artists of different backgrounds and view unique pieces.
Chromophore Artspace, the gallery located at 309 N. Adams Street in the historic Jackson Ward area, was foun
ded by local mixed media artist Ayah Davis-Karim and aims to "amplify the voices and work of local and regional artists and makers of color," according to an announcement from the gallery.
“At Chromophore, we are not just showing art — we’re creating space for connection, healing, and representation,” Davis-Karim said. “This space is for artists who have historically been left out of the traditional art world — and for the collectors who’ve been searching for art that reflects their cultural identity.”
The gallery intends to combine gallery exhibitions, a boutique, and community-focused events, with the Greek name "Chromophore," referring to the molecules that give color to all things in nature, from melanin to chlorophyll," they continued. Aside from exhibitions, the space will also include a selection of wearable art and home décor, interactive workshops and more. ...read more read less
