INDIANAPOLIS — A parent is accused of bringing a gun to their child's school and threatening a teacher over an assignment their child was given.
According to court documents, officers of the MSD Decatur Township School Police Department were called on Wednesday around 10:19 a.m. to Valley Mills
Elementary School on the report of a raptor system alert that had been activated. Reportedly, it had involved "an irate parent."
When police arrived, they noticed the parent had something on their waistband that resembled a firearm. Officers removed the gun and began to speak with the parent, court docs wrote.
Per the parent, their child was given "a work assignment that had to do with same sexuality relationships," with which the parent disagreed.
The parent was told that having a firearm on school property is an arrestable offense, court documents said. The parent then stated that they did not realize the firearm was on their person and that they had worn it to school property in the past.
The latter part of the parent's statement was further confirmed by a staff member at Valley Mills Elementary. As stated in the docs, the parent once came to the school, and as they exited, raised an arm enough to expose a firearm on their waistband. That staff member reportedly did not notice the parent had a gun on them until after they left the building.
Similarly, court docs noted that the parent did not brandish the firearm while at the school on Wednesday.
However, just 25 minutes after the parent was released by police, they allegedly sent messages to their child's teacher. According to court documents, the teacher was told that "god will condemn you to hell not only for your personal beliefs but for the fact that you use your position to mess with the minds of our children."
The parent also reportedly told the teacher they had "messed with the wrong family," could see "why [the teacher has] gotten death threats in the past" and that "u [sic] never know when god says it's our time so always be prepared."
The teacher did not go into work the next day out of fear for their safety, according to the documents.
Court docs indicated that the parent did not have any active warrants, but police are requesting one now for possession of a firearm on school property, harassment and intimidation.
Because no arrests have been made, the parent will not be named at this time.
