Colts wide receiver hosts youth football camp
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Josh Downs is getting ready for the team’s upcoming offseason program.
But before that gets started later this month, he’s spending time making a difference in the community.
On Sund
ay, Downs hosted a youth football camp inside the Indiana Farm Bureau Football Center, the Colts’ team complex.
“They look up to NFL players,” Downs said. “I did the same when I was younger. Sometimes you really forget what platform you have at this level. But things like this bring you back down to Earth and humble you.”
The camp was open to anyone from kindergartners to high school students. The younger kids focused on football fundamentals, while the older kids had more position-specific instruction.
“The younger kids, I want to tell them they need to play multiple positions, play multiple sports,” Downs said. “Of course if I ask them what’s their favorite sport, they’re going to yell, ‘Football!’ But I’m like, ‘Make sure you play other sports too.’ There’s a lot of different opportunities. “
The biggest message Downs said he had for the campers regardless of age was to just have fun.
“It puts a smile on my face just to see some kids just happy to just run around,” Downs said.
Downs also received support on Sunday from his Colts teammate, tight end Drew Ogletree, who worked with the campers as well.
“I appreciate Drew a lot,” Downs said. “Great dude as well. He’s out there helping high schoolers, while I’m out here messing with (helping) the little kids.”
Downs is getting ready for his third NFL season.
Last year, he played in 14 games. He had 72 receptions for 803 yards and 5 touchdowns.
In his rookie year, back in 2023, he played in 17 games and finished with 68 receptions for 771 yards and 2 touchdowns.
